There’s a lot going on for music fans at SXSW 2012. Plenty of AIAC favorites will be there, and fans of UK Bass, Cumbia Rock, Panabaynian Dancehall, neo-Jazz&B-Hop, Dubstep, MoombahtonDutch House/BubblingSouthern Rap former jailbirds, Hyphy/Mobb Music, Norteño, Classic New York Rap, Baile Funk, #OWS Rockers/Beatmakers, Balkan Beat Boxers, Afro Colombian, 3Ball, Chicano Rock meets Staten Island Rap, New York Rockers, and/or Dancehall will not be disappointed. There’s a host of “African” artists as well.

Video: Wale’s “My Sweetie”

The music video for the Nigerian-American rapper’s remake of an old West African standard.

VIDEO EVIDENCE / SWAHILI HEARD ON BET TELEVISION

… And it was not on a program about wildlife.

BET, the American music and reality TV channel is not usually associated with cosmopolitanism, so when the Tanzanian rapper, Gsan (from the legendary crew, XPlastaz), turned up on the BET Hip Hop Awards broadcast rapping in Swahili, I was shocked. As part of the awards show the producers pre-recorded a series of cyphers. Like the one above with DJ Premier (remember him together with Guru?), KRS-One, Wale, Nipsey Hussle and, of course, Gsan.

There he is at 1:31 holding his own.
