‘Race jokes’ in South Africa

South African advertising is known for its eagerness for political commentary; very little ends up being off-limits. Blink Stefanus, or BS Beer (the double meaning for ‘bullshit’ being an obvious choice) is no exception. In September this year the brand won a Pendoring, a local South African advertising award for TV and print campaigns in the Afrikaans language. About these ads

Nike Chiefs

If you’re not on TV, you don’t exist

This commercial is currently saturating terrestrial British TV channels. BMW shows off new wheels on sanitized streets of Cape Town. Narrator likes to work hard, play rough. Don’t like black coffee. Brother Freddy is a model. He likes it skinny and smooth. They ghost through town without passing by black folks, without getting passed by […]

Sunday Ephemera No.6

The wages of identity politics. When the memory of the 19th century radical American leader and thinker, Frederick Douglas, was enlisted (hopefully unsolicited) for a commercial for 1970s TV ad for afro hair gel.

Everybody Say “Yeah Yeah!”

Some of us will be a bit preoccupied with, you know, the biggest event in the world this weekend so it’s only natural that this Sunday will come and go without our tuning in to watch the Tony Awards. But then, I’ve never actually watched the Tony Awards. Of course, as we all know, Fela! […]

And Then There Was Adidas

“adidas Originals invites you to join David Beckham, Daft Punk, Snoop Dogg, Franz Beckenbauer, Noel Gallagher, Ian Brown, Ciara, Jay Baruchel, DJ Neil Armstrong and some of your dear, old friends for an intergalactic 2010 FIFA World Cup™ viewing party that you’ll never forget.” Ciara!? h/t Dirty Tackle

Vamos a ir a Sudafrica

Whether you’re in the Netherlands, Australia or Mexico, it seems Africa looks the same (but you already knew that). In yet another “original” 2010 World Cup promo, we find actors and newscasters from Mexico’s Televisa network “on the way to South Africa.” And no, they’re not lost—they’re in Africa, where you find only animals roaming […]

Animal Kingdom

It will get ridiculous over the next month.   For now the price goes to goes to the Australian media company, Optus. This is the concept for the ad, above: “… To prepare for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the Australian football team was involved in a secret training camp.  Unbeknown to anyone, the team flew […]

It must be Africa

EDIT: Earlier today I saw this ad on a feed from Dutch TV during the Ghana-Holland friendly. And then it did not look funny. It’s getting ridiculous. Children, animals and Masai. The commercial by ING Bank, official sponsor of the Dutch national team. Waka Waka. It must be Africa.

The best World Cup commercial?

After my praise of Bono earlier today, you must be wondering: No I am not lightheaded.  It’s the World Cup stupid. Clever commercial by Nike. Probably the best of the 2010 bunch I’ve seen thus far. And it is primarily about football.
