Shameless Self-Promotion

So I released an album this week, and shot my first ever music video for it as well. This is my personal reflection on Sorie Kondi’s original message, integrating footage from his video, and my own from New York and Freetown. I hope you enjoy.

Chief Boima plays Lincoln Center

He’s not just a blogger. This Sunday, August 7, at Lincoln Center DJ Chief Boima, who has been traveling in Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone this summer,  will warm up the crowd–along with Ahficionados–between sets by Iyadede, Spoek Mathambo and Blitz the Ambassador. It’s free. If you’re in New York City (I’m in Massachusetts till August 14), and this hype video by the organizers doesn’t not convince, then there’s something wrong with you.

Music Break

I forgot. I wanted to give AIAC’s Boima a shoutout for his Ghetto Balms Mix Tape at The Fader.

Download here.

Now it is officially weekend.

Shameless Self Promotion

AIAC contributor Boima Tucker (he is also an actual DJ/artist and behind the new “Made in Africa” party in New York City) gets the Mixpak Records treatment. Manifest Destiny

Earlier this week I attended a panel at the UN’s Millennium Development Goals Summit on inclusive employment in Africa with participants that included such high profile figures as Mo Ibrahim, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, and Mizengo Kayanza Peter Pinda.  So what is “inclusive employment”?  Basically to ensure that we develop other sectors of society outside of resource extraction favored by multinational firms and African governments, so the benefits can be felt by everyone.  Because we can and should question the merit of wealthy people sitting around talking about what poor people need, I feel that it’s important to share back when given an opportunity to gain some insight on what our African leaders are thinking.

One constant refrain throughout the panel was the importance of investing in youth when creating these inclusive employment initiatives.

Pitch Perfect Friday

Obviously, we here at Africa is a Country are fully behind Bafana Bafana, and the rest of the teams representing Africa at the 2010 World Cup. And, yes, unlike Chimamanda Adichie, that also includes Algeria. As this is the second World Cup I am watching as an American citizen, though, I am also supporting the U.S. national team.
