Hot off the heels of Fela! The Musical’s phenomenal 11 Tony Award nominations comes the news (via Deadline New York) that Chiwetel Ejiofor is “formally attached” to play the lead in the Fela biopic slated for release in 2011. The film is being produced by Focus Features and will be directed by Steve McQueen, the British artist who made his feature film debut in 2008 with the much-lauded Irish hunger strike drama, Hunger. McQueen will also co-write the screenplay with Nigerian novelist and playwright Biyi Bandele.

It seems to be a good week for British actors of African descent. I like it.
