Dazed & Confused on 'new South African culture'

The June issue of culture magazine, Dazed & Confused, will have a 32-page section on “new South African youth culture.” Word is they cover Smarteez, house music, artists, filmmakers, etcetera. I want to see what’s in it, although I may still be disappointed as predictably the issue also include a spread of performance artists Die Antwoord who took the reporter to the coloured ghetto of Mitchell’s Plain. Was Higgovale, their apparent home base against the slopes of Table Mountain, too dangerous?

They’ve put some videos up on the site already. The artist Zwelethu Mthethwa (he has a new monograph published by Aperture) contributes the issue’s “Last Shot.” Dazed Digital went to film Mthethwa in his studio. (Interestingly, given the issue’s forward look, Mthethwa’s work is talked about in the context of the past. He confronts the idea that Apartheid is over.)
