Since it first came out last year I’ve had Nas and Damian Marley’s concept album “Distant Relatives” on repeat. There are some lapses on the album, but I really like the track “The Promised Land.” Basically Marley and Nas updates Dennis Brown to big up Africa.

Nneka & Nas Present: Heartbeat

If you’re a regular reader, then you know we love Nigerian-German songstress Nneka. Her new album, Concrete Jungle, has been out for a few months and she’s now on tour with Nas and Damian Marley, aka Distant Relatives. A product of that collaboration is a remix of Nneka’s “Heartbeat” featuring Nas. I like. A lot.

Trailer: “Distant Relatives”

The new 5 minute trailer for the new Nas-Damian Marley collaboration, “Distant Relatives”–out next month–where they engage with the music of Africa. (I’ve blogged before about some of the leaked tunes from the album.)

Can’t wait for this. They’ve announced a tour schedule in the US and Europe this summer to promote the album. Sadly, I’ll miss the Brooklyn date.

Nas and Damian Marley Goes to Africa

I have blogged before about “Distant Relatives,” the collaboration between Nas and Damian Marley where they make explicit the connections African music and rap and reggae.

Well, now two of the tracks off the forthcoming album have now leaked: “Strong Will Continue ” and “As We Enter” (is that a Fela sample?).

I like “As We Enter” better.

I am looking forward to the release of Nas and Damian Marley’s new project “Distant Relatives,” which deliberately highlights the African roots of hip hop and reggae. (They sample, among others, Fela Kuti; on the MySpace Page you can hear a snippet from one of the tunes, “As We Enter“). The album should be out next year.
