Tumblr is a country

Yes we have a global domination strategy. WordPress (here), Twitter,  Facebook and now Tumblr.

Africa is a Country; the academic edition

Between them Wayne Marshall and Martin Murray pointed me to these 2 panels at the recent annual meeting of the American Geographical Association that took place here in New York City: [Read more...]

Africa is a Country on Twitter and Facebook

This is just a reminder to not forget that we also have a new @Africasacountry account on Twitter where we tweet and retweet media criticism and analysis as well as new music, sports, arts and photography. Follow us there. The same goes for our Facebook page. Like us there too.

Africa is a Country

Must be our blog title.

Someone named STONE decides to vent on The Hill’s Congress Blog about US foreign aid in a piece about policing the already shrinking foreign aid budget that’s currently only 1.5% of all federal spending:

It does not matter how little the amount sent to foreign countries, it is the principal of the thing…why send aid to china, a country that continues to grow our debt and buy it up and yet we send them aid? why send aid to africa, we owe that country nothing, just as we owe nothing to every other country..we Americans fought our way out of our own tyranny and yet we did it…they should do the same without our help…we even had less and do less than those countries do now and yet we help them…why?

That’s a good start. (Sojourner has her own blog, a culture blog for teens of color called Sojo’s Trumpet.) She sent me a poem that she had written for an assignment in a diversity class at her school. The assignment “… was to write a poem addressing the stereotypes I felt overwhelmed by and to counter those perceptions.” I asked her if I could post the poem on our blog.  She obliged.

Last week The Brookings Institute held a conversation with the Nigerian Foreign Minister Chief Ojo Maduekwe on “The Nigeria-U.S. Partnership for Regional Security in Africa,” in Washington D.C. Not really earth shattering stuff, except when 52 minutes into the discussion a senior US State Department official for Africa decided to call out my blog. Serious.

* As for the image, above, it has nothing to do with it; I just wanted to put up a picture of Chantal Biya, the First Lady of Cameroon, and her husband, Life President Paul Biya, with Barack and Michelle Obama. [[H/T: Daniel Morris]
