In 1987, two years before the Congolese grand maître Franco died (although never substantiated, it is widely believed because of AIDS), he released “Attention na Sida” (Beware of AIDS). Today’s new generation of Congolese musicians hasn’t forgotten. Préservons-nous.–Tom Devriendt

thanks so much for sharing this. It has been hard for me to find video of HIV/AIDS campaign music (Usione Soo from Tanzania being an exception) and I like to incorporate different media in my course.
In the mid/late 1980s USAID financed both Franco: Attention Na SIDA and Onyeka Onwenu & King Sunny Ade : Wait for me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTn_k4Sgayk 1st part of Franco song– there is also a live version.
The styles may be a little dated for your students. Hilarion Nguema also did a popular SIDA song in the late 80s.
Thanks, these are really great! I especially like that examples exist that predate the bulk of international attention (and esp. funding) for AIDS in Africa.
In a different class, I showed the We Are The World video, so obviously, I don’t have a problem with stuff made before my students were born.
