The maskandi musician Bhekumuzi Luthuli passed away Wednesday after a long illness. He was only 48.
Maskandi music is associated with the rural parts of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal. It is also the music of Zulu migrants to Johannesburg. Luthuli, along with another musician Ihashi Elimhlophe (Bheki Ngcobo) did a lot to gain the genre mainstream success in South Africa. (Internationally Paul Simon has borrowed from maskandi for his “Graceland” in the 1980s. You can also here traces of it in the music of Vampire Weekend)
Anyway, today’s time to celebrate his music and life. The song above, “Impatha” is one of his hits. His greatest hit is “Imilanjwana.”

I find it very difficult to accept the fact that a website as big as this can just write without proper investigation. Firstly, Bhekumuzi is not Bhekumushi. Secondly, he only got sick a few day before he died, not long term sickness that you talk about, and lastly Imilanjwana is the greatest hit of Bhekumuzi Luthuli, thus the album Inkinga Ngu R7 sold past 100 000 copies. no offence but please remove the part that say he died after a long illness because that is not true, and it affects us (his fans) emotionally. He released his lattest album “Imali Yabelungu” 2 months before his death.

However, the long illness reference comes from a number of news reports, including the Sowetan, who reported on his passing and to which I linked.

The long illness they talking about is the kidney failures which his record company (Gallo) claims he was having, but that is just not the case. If you can listen to his last two albums(1818 and Imali Yabelungu) you will get the message..
