Rare piece of film footage of The Mahotella Queens (without Mahlatini this time) recording their hit “Umculo Kawupheli” circa 1974. [The song was released on the albums, "Duck Food" and "Soweto Never Sleeps--Classic Female Zulu Jive"].
Also great footage of 1970s black South African urban life (recording studios, musicians, record stores, fashion, etc).

Saturday afternoon. The huge stereo speakers out on the stoep. Yard full of aunts, uncles, assorted cousins. The smell of goat meat on the braai. My mom and her sisters breaking into an impromptu line dance, doeks and aprons flying about.

Lovely. Love the white ouk behind the mixing table unable to resist swaying along.

Is that a young West Nkosi sitting at the board with the engineer? Did he produce this session?

ekapa: it could be west nkosi, although that guy is a chubbier than I imagine Nkosi to be at this stage.
Yolanda: true. Effortless.
