My sister sent me these images (above and below)–making their rounds on the internets–of the new Green Point Stadium in Cape Town where one of the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup will be played. The images were taken early this week when the stadium lights were turned on for the first time. Magnificent.
I am on course to go to South Africa for the earlier part of the World Cup (I’ll be mainly in Cape Town since I am traveling with my 4 year old daughter), and though I don’t have any tickets, I hope I get lucky and, especially, get to see a game–even if it was between two unglamorous sides–at the Green Point Stadium. For now, enjoy the images.

Just returned to the safety of the kent countryside from a 3 week trip to SA.
Even with the limited upgrades all around the staduims only and from airports to staduims only , it is still declining. Dont owrry about tickets there is still plenty as it is reported that 30 000 went astray in the mail out LOL what do u expect. Again only a few will make the millions , but the millions will make nothing.

I admire your forbearance in dealing with trolls, I’m referring to Mark Richardson’s comments, but I wonder what grievance would make anyone refuse to acknowledge even the the most obvious accomplishments of an admittedly deeply flawed, but decidedly much improved country compared to what it was 20 years ago. The stadium all lit up is quite impressive and more so because just six months ago the outcry was that SA would not have the facilities ready in time. I’ve noticed now that it’s clear that things will be ready the critique has shifted to something else. It’s kinda like having a debate with someone who is arguing in bad faith and keeps changing the premise of the discussion.
The photos are fantastic. Durban’s new stadium is looking beautiful as well, and nearly finished. The mock-up pictures on the ‘net don’t do it justice, but you can be sure I’ll be taking some pictures of my own once it’s done.
What a magnificent sight indeed. I can just imagine what the atmosphere will be like, the sound of vuvuzelas, the sea breeze blowing in from Green Point and Table Mountain towering over it all. It’s going to be great, and it will be even better if the likes of Mark Richardson, who will persist in shifting the goalposts, stay the hell away.
