Recently my friend, Herman Wasserman, and I praised South Africans for using the controversy swirling around world-beating athlete Caster Semenya, whose gender was questioned by international athletic authorities after she smashed the 800 meter women’s record, to their attempts to recast sexuality despite widespread homophobia, femicide, and widespread rape in that country.

We spoke too soon.

This week Semenya appears on the cover of a tabloid magazine in South Africa with “… a less ambiguous hair style, a designer black dress, jewelry, makeup and nail polish.”
