ETHIOPIA’S PRESIDENT CAN’T STAND THIS SONG

Teddy Afro, the most popular Ethiopian singer, was recently released from prison after serving time for what was widely believed to be trumped-up charges. “Mr Afro was jailed for a hit-and-run incident in 2006, despite always insisting that he was not in the car which the prosecution said knocked down and killed a homeless man in Addis Ababa.” The real reason, according to his supporters: His music upset the country’s prime minister, Meles Zenawi, who is an ally of the United States.

Among these the song, “Yasteseryal,” (the video, above, is a mash-up):   “Mr Afro got into trouble for songs which compared Mr Meles’s lot to a brutal junta.”

Give me more of this music.
